FOOD AND DRINKS IN BERLIN

Are you hungry, thirsty, and—above all—new here. Let´s call it a day! That can easily happen in Berlin when you’re looking for the right restaurant. Here are our dining tips.

30 restaurants and bars in Berlin, sorted by what you are looking for right now. The long lunch in the exposed concrete courtyard. The three-star menu with wine pairing. The kebab at three in the morning. We recommend based on reputation in the Berlin food scene, not primarily on Google ratings. Some of our classics (Borchardt, Mustafa, Curry 36, Konnopke's) have ratings in the low 4s. That is not due to the quality, but rather tourist wait times and polarizing tradition. They are still part of the essential Berlin itinerary. For our guests at Kurfürstendamm, there are also five tips right in Charlottenburg. Breakfast gets its own article.

It's up to you

Michelin-starred cuisine or currywurst. Pho or pasta. Lunch or midnight.

Berlin’s food scene is both international and unique. In Mitte, Michelin-starred restaurants sit right next to organic farmers’ markets; in Kreuzberg, Neapolitan pizza and Sichuan noodles can be found on two different streets; and in Charlottenburg, the city’s best sushi is right next to the boulevard. No matter which of our three locations you start from, we’ll show you what’s really worth checking out.

Breakfast

Specialty Coffee, Brunch, Classic Berlin Breakfast Dishes

We have a separate article on breakfast. It features the best spots in town and the ipartment breakfast box for those days when you don't feel like going out.

Breakfast in Berlin

Lunch

Organic lunch, market hall, or vegetarian snack bar

Three places to grab lunch in Berlin, each with its own unique character. The Markthalle for variety and a street-food vibe, Chipperfield for a quiet, organic meal in an architectural setting, and W The Imbiss for unpretentious fusion cuisine on Kastanienallee. Three very different answers to the same question.

Markthalle Neun

The renovated 19th-century brick hall is one of Kreuzberg’s liveliest spots. On weekdays, you’ll find permanent stalls here offering cheese, bread, wine, and coffee from Berlin-based producers, along with small snacks for a quick bite between meals. On Thursday evenings starting at 5 p.m., the hall transforms into a street food venue featuring rotating chefs from around the world and long beer benches in the center.

Chipperfield Kantine

It’s actually the staff cafeteria at the David Chipperfield architectural firm, but at lunchtime, the doors are also open to outside guests. Exposed concrete, a green courtyard, and a small menu featuring organic ingredients that changes daily. It’s worth making a reservation, because tables fill up quickly and the atmosphere is calm and focused rather than hectic.

Veggie Fusion

W The Imbiss

On Kastanienallee in Mitte, there’s been this unassuming snack bar for years that serves vegetarian fusion cuisine that, on paper, shouldn’t work. Naan pizza with mango and cilantro, Indian burritos, dal bowls. It sounds crazy, but it tastes surprisingly good. In the summer, you can sit on the wooden benches out front and watch life go by on Kastanienallee.
Open Hours:
Daily from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Ku'damm Insider: Austrian

Ottenthal

Austrian
Charlottenburg
€€
Viennese schnitzel and Austrian classics on Kantstraße, right in the heart of the Ku'damm area. The schnitzel is thin, crispy, and traditional, served with a potato and cucumber salad instead of fries. The restaurant also offers a small but well-curated Austrian wine list with recommendations for every dish. Lunch is usually more relaxed than dinner; reservations are recommended for dinner.
Open Hours:

Mon–Sat 12–15 and 16–23:30 · Sun closed

Street Food (All Day)

Currywurst, kebab, Konnopkes

Three Berlin snack bar staples for late nights and quick hunger pangs. Curry 36 is open until 5:00 a.m., Mustafa until 1:30 a.m., and Konnopkes is only open during the day—but it hasn’t changed a bit since 1930. If nothing’s open at this location, our self-service shops at the Berlin Mitte and Airport locations are here to help.

Curry 36

The age-old question in Berlin: Curry 36 or Konnopkes? We say both, but Curry 36 has the clear advantage that there’s still a line at the counter here even at three in the morning. The classic order: currywurst without the casing, served with “Schranke” fries. Mustafa is right next door, so you can easily combine the two for a double round of street food.

Mustafa's Vegetable Kebab

Probably Berlin's most photographed snack bar, right next to Curry 36 on Mehringdamm. What goes into the flatbread: a roasted potato and aubergine mix, feta, fresh mint, a hint of lemon. The queue is reliable, so plan for a 20 to 30 minute wait. If you are in a rush, come between 2 PM and 4 PM on weekdays, when it's more relaxed.

Konnopke's Imbiss

Berlin's oldest currywurst stand, operating since 1930 under the U-Bahn bridge on Schönhauser Allee. The Konnopke family still makes their own sauce, available in three levels of spiciness. An East Berlin original with standing tables in the open air, and patio heaters in the winter. Good to know: closed on Sundays and Mondays, so not an everyday spontaneous snack.

Tip for late check-in

In Berlin Mitte and at the airport there is a corner shop right in the building, around the clock. When nothing else is open in the evening, you'll find drinks, snacks and the essentials there.

Dinner

Schnitzel, pork knuckle or Parisian nostalgia

Three addresses for the classic city experience in the evening, all with their own history. Borchardt for the obligatory political schnitzel in a dining room from 1853, Zur Letzten Instanz as the city's oldest tavern, Diener Tattersall as a West Berlin pub classic in Charlottenburg. A reservation is worthwhile for all three, and well in advance for the weekend.

Borchardt

Probably the most famous Wiener Schnitzel in the country, served in a high-ceilinged dining room with stucco and Gründerzeit mirrors. Here, politicians, actors and business figures have sat side by side for generations, sometimes at neighbouring tables. The order writes itself: Schnitzel with potato salad and cranberries. The online reviews are mixed, the Schnitzel is not. Reservation several days in advance, at weekends more like weeks.

Zur Letzten Instanz

Berlin’s oldest tavern, founded in 1621, and therefore one of the few addresses in the city to bear a date from the Thirty Years' War. Eisbein, meatballs, Berliner Weisse, complemented by a tiled stove and wood-panelled rooms. Sure, it’s touristic. But in the honest version, not as a Disney imitation. Closed on Sundays, so not the spontaneous spot.

Probably Charlottenburg's most authentic Berlin pub since 1954, founded by former boxer Franz Diener as a meeting place for artists, actors and old West Berlin. Black-and-white photos of regulars from decades past hang on the dark wood panelling. On the menu: Berlin meatballs with potato salad, Wiener Schnitzel, pork knuckle, along with draught Kölsch. Three bars for three very different evening moods. Buck and Breck for hidden cocktail craftsmanship, Monkey Bar for the skyline with a view of the Tiergarten, KINK for the combination of bar and restaurant at Pfefferberg. Reservations are recommended for all of them, and for Buck and Breck they can only be made by phone.

Italian cuisine

Homemade pasta, Neapolitan pizza

Good Italian food is surprisingly hard to find in Berlin. These two places are the exception. Coccodrillo by Weinbergspark with its seventies diner look and Mine in Charlottenburg with its long wine list. Two very different approaches to the same country.

Mine

Classic Italian cuisine with a daring approach to its own interpretations, run by an Italian-born team. On the menu: tortelli with burrata and truffle, vitello tonnato, branzino. Classics that are well executed. The wine list is long with a clear focus on Italy, featuring recommendations from the sommelier who takes her time for you. The regular guest factor is high, which is usually a good sign.

Insider tip: Coccodrillo & 100 Gramm Bar

The real insider is the ladies' toilet: legendary and a talking point in its own right. And as a tip for the whole evening: first go next door to the 100 Gramm Bar (during the week there is a Martini Happy Hour there until 7 pm) and then the barely five minutes across to the Coccodrillo.

Asian cuisine

Sashimi, Pho, Sichuan noodles

Berlin has one of the largest Asian diasporas in Europe, which is reflected in the restaurant scene. Three addresses, three countries, three boroughs: Sasaya for classic Japanese in Prenzlauer Berg, Madame Ngo for Vietnam on Kantstrasse, Chengdu Nudelhaus for spicy Sichuan cuisine in Mitte.

Sasaya

One of the best Japanese restaurants in Berlin, run by a Japanese family that has been based in Prenzlauer Berg for decades. Sushi and sashimi of a quality that you rarely find in Berlin, prepared in front of the guests. A good indicator: the proportion of Japanese guests on a normal evening is high. You have to book well in advance, sometimes weeks.

In summer, the windows open out to the street, and the restaurant becomes part of boulevard life.

Chengdu Noodle House 蜀味记

Small, very authentic Sichuan noodle joint in Mitte, run by a family from Chengdu. Hand-pulled noodles in a hearty broth with that typical Sichuan pepper tingle that makes your lips go numb. The menu is short and focused: beef noodle soup, Dan Dan noodles, alongside small starters like Mapo tofu, cold cucumber salad, wontons in chilli oil. Truly tastes like Sichuan, not adapted for German tastes. Cash only, so bring cash.

Arab cuisine

Berlin and Tel Aviv

Michelin-starred cuisine

Three Stars or the Brandenburg Patch

Berlin has developed its own fine-dining identity: less pomp than Munich, more concept than elsewhere. Rutz

Berlin’s only three-star restaurant and therefore the city's culinary pinnacle. Marco Müller cooks modern German cuisine with consistently regional ingredients. Nobelhart & Schmutzig

Brutally local. And that is not a marketing catchphrase here, but a concept. All ingredients come from within a 200-kilometre radius of Berlin. No black pepper, no lemon, no olive. Vegetarian & Vegan

Vegan fine dining

Two vegan addresses, both of which hold a Michelin star. Berlin is leading the way in Europe here.
