Frankfurt's culinary diversity: from apple wine to sushi

More than a banking city

At first glance, Frankfurt seems like a city of bankers. The culinary variety is nevertheless impressive: Italian restaurants, the best sushi in town, starred restaurants and vegan restaurants. Get out and discover the highlights of the city.

Apple wine? Apple wine? Ebbelwoi rules!

The Hessian national drink

Ebbelwei, Ebbelwoi, Äppelwoi: The dialect makes it difficult to understand; what is meant is always garbled apple juice with around 5.5 percent alcohol. It is served in a mug (krug) and in a glass (gerippte). Try it in the pubs that generously and with pleasure serve this Hessian national drink.

These three restaurants are among the most traditional in the city. You sit at long wooden tables, eat regional specialties like Grie Soß (green sauce with eggs and potatoes), Schlachtplatte (a meat dish with potatoes and onions), Rippchen (fried dumplings), and Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), and quickly strike up conversations with your fellow diners. In the evenings, the restaurants are usually packed to the brim. That’s touristy, but it doesn’t matter because it’s nice and fun.
