BREAKFAST IN BERLIN

There's nothing like a good start to the day? You can find coffee and co. here in our Breakfast Club. The people of Berlin love breakfast and they love brunch. And on weekends, they also like to have an extended one.

Berlin eats breakfast late, in large quantities and preferably all morning. Between sourdough bakeries in Charlottenburg, brunch spots in Prenzlauer Berg and tiny cafes in Kreuzberg side streets lies one of the liveliest breakfast scenes in Europe. We’ve compiled 15 spots, sorted by district, from the specialty coffee roaster to the family café that feels like a living room. Plus, an insider tip from a Berlin woman. For those who linger later in the day, there’s FOOD AND DRINKS IN BERLIN found it.

GOOD MORNING

Croissant
Or a smoothie. Eggs Benedict or muesli. Six o'clock or fourteen o'clock.

There is no single breakfast spot in Berlin. In Mitte, the specialty coffee scene meets Japanese fusion, in the west, old café classics maintain a high standard of service, in Prenzlauer Berg, brunch newcomers from the very first week are among the top players, in Kreuzberg, French patisserie sits alongside Mediterranean menemen culture. Choose the district you’re in—these are our three favorites.

Lunch, dinner or bars?

30 restaurants, fine dining, street food and bars

There is a separate article for lunch, dinner and everything in between. With Berlin classics, star addresses, Italian cuisine, top Asian cuisine and three bars for three evening moods.

FOOD AND DRINKS IN BERLIN

Breakfast in Berlin Mitte

Snacking all day long.

Mitte has the highest concentration of brunch spots. Established dayspots that turn into bistros in the evening meet specialists in bagels, French toast, and well-thought-out breakfast menus. Here, the chances are highest of finding a good spot spontaneously, even though almost everywhere is booked on weekends.

House of Small Wonder

Japanese-American
Mitte
€€
When visitors come from abroad, I go with them to the House of Small Wonder. From the outside it looks unassuming; inside it’s a curved staircase between plants and a backyard like a conservatory. The Japanese-American menu is the only one of its kind in the city. Order the Japanese-American toast; reserve it in advance; otherwise you’ll be left standing.
