class="wp-block-heading">Carnival in Cologne – things you should know

Before things really get started, you should know a few basic things about the Cologne Carnival. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a Cologne expert, but a little basic knowledge will help you avoid being immediately labeled as an „Immi“ („immigrant“). Here are the most important information so that you can start the season prepared:

Carnival is a season The session officially begins on November 11 at 11:11 a.m., but things really get crazy only starting on the day after Saint Nicholas' Day. From Thursday to Tuesday, a state of emergency is in effect. The highlight is the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade), and in addition, there are many smaller neighborhood parades.

The whole city is celebrating Carnival is not an event that takes place in a marquee or club; it is everywhere. During the hot season, Cologne residents and visitors hug each other; the celebration takes place not only in pubs but also on the streets and squares. The city becomes a living room.

Costume is mandatory Without a costume, nothing works. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but you should wear something, whether it’s just a clown hat or a cardboard nose. Important: A pumpkin look helps to survive outside in changeable weather. And costumes that could harm others (with weapons props or sharp parts) are absolutely taboo.

Should I wear a tie? We wouldn’t recommend it unless you really want to get rid of it anyway. It’s an old tradition that women (the „Weiber“) cut off the men’s ties on Women’s Carnival as a sign of symbolic power takeover. So: Either leave the favorite tie at home or expect to lose it.

Enjoy the parades The Rosenmontagszug is mandatory, but the school and neighborhood processions on Sunday and the Ghost Parade on Saturday are also worth seeing. Bring a large bag or backpack for Kamelle and Strüßjer; you’ll catch more fish than you think!

Food and Drink Kölsch is as much a part of the city as the cathedral. On no account should you order an old beer (that is Düsseldorf beer) or a Pils from the bar staff. Kölsch is served in slender 0.2l glasses. A half-heineken (not a half chicken, but a rye bread with medium-aged Gouda cheese and onions) or a meat bread creates a good basis for celebrating.

Singing along and swaying Cologne carnival songs are included and are sung loudly in every pub. Fortunately, there are Spotify playlists with all the classics for you to learn by heart. The absolute must-listen songs are: Viva Colonia (Höhner), Just have a met drink (Bläck Fööss) and Superjeilezick (Brings).

Alaaf instead of Helau This is really important: In Cologne, the mocking call is Alaaf (pronounced: „A-laaf“). The call Helau belongs to Düsseldorf, and is therefore one of Cologne’s arch-enemies. Whoever calls Helau immediately identifies themselves as a stranger. Incidentally, „Kölle Alaaf!“ means „Cologne alone“ or „Cologne above all“ and is the shortest declaration of love for the city.

Cologne vocabulary You don't have to speak fluent Kölsch, but you should know a few basic terms. You can read about which ones are included in the next section.

Cologne tradition From the opening of the sessions to the Dreigestirn and the blister burn, Cologne Carnival is full of rituals. Here are the most important things for everyone who wants to come through the carnival relaxed:

Pubs instead of party mile The most authentic celebrations can be experienced in the corner pubs in Nippes or Ehrenfeld, not on Zülpicher Straße. There, people dance and sing, and the Cologne people still know the lyrics. At the „Zülpicher“ and on the rings, the audience is younger, louder, and often more party-oriented than carnival-oriented.

Intertidal water! Drink plenty of water regularly, because Kölsch can also cause a hangover. During long hours of partying, it is important to drink water from time to time. In many pubs you can order free tap water from the bar counter.

Protect your jacket Pack a plastic bag so that your jacket stays dry in the crowded, sweaty pub. With the temperature differences from inside to outside, a wet jacket is the last thing you want to have to deal with.

The classics are known Singing along is just part of the experience! Nobody expects perfection, but at least you should know the choruses of the classics. The absolute must-listen songs: Viva Colonia (Höhner), Drink doch eine met (Brings), Superjeilezick (BAP).

Start early Many pubs open as early as 8 or 9 in the morning. Those who get there early will still get a seat. The queue will be an experience thanks to the singing and dancing!

Follow the rules Glass bottles are often prohibited during moving; use reusable cups. Many pubs also offer „deposit-free Kölsch cups“ that you can take with you.

Alaaf instead of Helau Once again: the correct name is Alaaf

Insider tip

By a Cologne woman

Eckkneipen in Ehrenfeld or Nippes are definitely preferable to the Zülpicher Straße.
